There are four primary types of brainwaves. Delta is associated with deep sleep & the neurotransmitter serotonin. Theta is the twilight brainwave. It is Related to Memory Retrieval, Creativity and the neurotransmitter GABA. Next is Alpha. It is the resting state of the brain, is associated with meditation and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Finally, we have Beta, It’s associated with the neurotransmitter dopamine & is produced when we are awake, alert and attentive. Neurological Dysregulation of brainwaves interferes in the balance of neuro-transmitters in the brain which can cause neurological symptoms.

Brain Based Therapy is Therapy designed to address Neurological Dysregulation by normalizing brain wave patterns. The key components are oxygen, unilateral adjustments, supplements that support neurotransmitters and brain based rehab. The therapies I use are brain region specific therapeutic interventions such as targeting exercises to stimulate the parietal lobe.

Nociceptors are sensory nerve endings within joints that transmit signals to the brain indicating abnormal function and injury, physical or chemical, to body tissues. They are stimulated when joints are fixated, misaligned and subluxated.

Nociceptor signals from fixated joints stimulate the hypothalamus causing release of Adreno-corticotropic Releasing Hormone (ACTH) from the anterior pituitary. ACTH stimulates the Adrenal glands to release Cortisol, the primary stress chemical of the body.

Research has demonstrated that sustained Cortisol exposure can cause serious damage to the Hippocampus (memory, mood, space awareness) & Prefrontal Cortex (emotion, arousal, impulsivity, and attention).

Brain Based Therapy is Therapy designed to combat the damage stress causes in the brain. The key components are oxygen, unilateral adjustments, supplements that support neurotransmitters and brain based rehab. The therapies I use are brain region specific therapeutic interventions such as audio visual entrainment to normalize brainwaves and eliminate the negative effects of stress.

Bruce Perry, a researcher at Baylor College of Medicine, demonstrated that children experiencing prolonged stress had a brain that was nearly 1/3 smaller than the brain of a normal child. So, significant brain cell death happens the longer you are exposed to stress and don’t do anything about it if you are able to.

The stressors which cause Neurological Dysregulation Syndrome are physical & emotional stress, trauma, drugs & toxins, poor nutrition and misaligned & fixated joints called subluxations.

The Journal of Neuroscience reports that the McGill University Center for Research on pain has found; “The longer the individual has had fibromyalgia, the greater the gray matter loss (which means brain cell death), with each year of fibromyalgia being equivalent to 9.5 times the loss in normal aging”.

Ned Kalin, a medical doctor from Jefferson Medical College states “If key parts of the brain, or the entire brain, are weakened by stress chemicals, it could have major effects on the rest of the body. A common denominator in everything from chronic pain to immune dysfunction to heart disease & depression may be in the brain. It seems that when stress damages the brain, it is analogous to lines of code in computer software – neither the body nor mind will operate correctly until the damage is fixed.”

There are two common accepted Migraine theories. The vascular theory, from 1940, states that abnormal blood flow is the culprit. However this theory is inadequate to explain the full spectrum of Migraine symptoms, such as light sensitivity. The neuro-vascular theory, from 1970, speaks of reduced electrical activity in the brain which leads to an irritated brain stem, abnormal neurotransmitter levels and subsequent vascular spasticity. For me, the question remains, what causes the decreased electrical activity that starts this neuro-vascular cascade?
Brain Based Therapy is Neurological Therapy Consisting of treating reduced electrical activity in the brain. The key components are oxygen, unilateral adjustments, supplements that support neurotransmitters and brain based rehabilitation. The therapies I use are brain region specific therapeutic interventions such as saccadic eye movements to stimulate the frontal lobe. Migraine sufferers lose days of their life to this disease.

Symptoms typical of Migraines were described in detail in Babylonian writings dating back to 3000 BC. To this day many people think that a Migraine is just a really bad headache. But Migraines are a neurological DISEASE. Medicine’s approach to Migraines is prescription anti-inflammatories and groups of drugs that affect neurotransmitters such as Opiods, Triptans, anti-epileptics and anti-depressants.
Brain Based Therapy is Neurological Therapy consisting of treating the Cerebellum & Brain Dysfunction. Brain Based Therapy is very different from standard chiropractic care. The key components are oxygen, unilateral adjustments, supplements that support neurotransmitters and brain based rehabilitation. Brain based rehab therapies I use include Exercise with Oxygen Therapy, warm water calorics, uni-lateral auditory stimulation, electro-acupuncture, olfactory stimulation and more.
Migraine sufferers lose days of their life to this disease. The next time you hear the word Migraine, please mention my name, Dr. Andy Vantreese and Brain Based therapy. I would love the opportunity to help.

How can Brain Based Therapy reduce stress, eliminate neurological dysregulation, reduce Migraine headaches, promote better health and achieve more permanent results? Neuroplasticity.

The medical journal Cerebral Cortex from Jan 2007 defines neuroplasticity as the brains ability to undergo functional AND structural changes in response to internal and external environmental stimuli. What does that mean? It means that your brain will either IMPROVE or DETERIORATE based on the function of your body and your lifestyle.

Brain Based Therapy is neurological therapy performed over time that is targeted at reversing Neurological Dysregulation through positive neuroplastic changes in the brain to produce more permanent results. BBT is comprised of giving the brain the fuel it needs by administering Oxygen and supplementing with nutrients that support neurotransmitters and improving the electrical activity and connections of the brain via Brain based rehabilitation.

Neurological Dysregulation of brainwaves may interfere in the balance of neuro-transmitters in the brain causing neurological conditions such as Migraines. The medical approach is to use drugs that effect neurotransmitter levels. A more natural approach is to balance the brainwaves and you also balance the neurotransmitters.

A study presented at the International Research and Philosophy Symposium held at Sherman College finds that Chiropractic Adjustments have a positive effect on the Central Nervous System, specifically on the primary frequencies of brain function.

The study was conducted over a 3 yr period. 100 volunteers were examined with an electro-encephalogram before and after chiropractic adjustments. The scans checked the right left brain balance, the amount of total brain activity and the primary regions of activity. The scans revealed improvement in all areas of brain function. In particular, the researchers noticed an increase in the meditative alpha brain wave pattern that is associated with a greater degree of relaxation, health and healing.

Let’s use Fibromyalgia as an example of the detriments of Neurological Dysregulation. The Journal of Neuroscience reports that the McGill University Center for Research on pain has found; “The longer the individual has had fibromyalgia, the greater the gray matter loss, with each year of fibromyalgia being equivalent to 9.5 times the loss in normal aging”.

And how’s this for scary. Bruce Perry Researcher at Baylor College of Medicine demonstrated that children experiencing prolonged stress had a brain that was nearly 1/3 smaller than the brain of a normal child. Still think stress is no big deal!?

So how does our alignment create stress to the Nervous system? Within our joints and muscles are nociceptors. Nociceptors are sensory nerve endings that tell the brain when there is abnormal function and/or injury to body’s tissues. The proper function of the brain is dependent on normal sensory messages from properly aligned joints and muscles.

Nociceptor signals from fixated & misaligned joints & muscles cause the brain to tell the adrenal glands to release Cortisol, the primary stress chemical of the body. Research has shown that sustained Cortisol exposure can cause serious damage to the brain. Specifically the areas that are responsible for our memory, mood, emotion, arousal, attention, space awareness and impulsiveness.

If you often forget where your keys are, have roller coaster emotions, swinging moods, can’t stayed focused, bump into things often, etc. maybe it is time to have your alignment checked.

Currently, there are two theories to explain Migraines.

The vascular theory from 1940 suggests that Migraines are the result of spasmodic blood vessels. It helps make sense of the pounding and throbbing pain, but is inadequate to explain other Migraine phenomenon such as light sensitivity.

The neuro-vascular theory from 1970 suggests a process called Cortical Spreading Depression which is reduced electrical activity in the brain leading to abnormal neurotransmitter levels and subsequent vascular issues.

For me, the question still remains what causes the reduced electrical activity in the brain that starts this neurovascular cascade! Well I am here to tell you that I believe it is due to Neurological Dysregulation.

A healthy, balanced & properly regulated Nervous System will produce the appropriate brain waves at the appropriate levels and at the appropriate times for any given situation. The tense unbalanced nervous system begins firing in a random and unorganized pattern resulting in atypical brain wave patterns as a result of stress. Physical and emotional stress, trauma, drugs, toxins, poor nutrition, nutritional allergies, and subluxations perpetuate the Neurological Dysregulation Syndrome.

Think stress is no big deal? Ned Kalin, a medical doctor from Jefferson Medical College has said, “If key parts of the brain, or the entire brain, are weakened by stress chemicals, it could have major effects on the rest of the body. A common denominator in everything from chronic pain to immune dysfunction to heart disease and depression may be in the brain. It seems that when stress damages the brain, it is analogous to lines of code in computer software – neither the body nor mind will operate correctly until the damage is fixed.”

Let me repeat that, “NEITHER THE BODY NOR THE MIND WILL OPERATE CORRECTLY UNTIL THE DAMAGE IS FIXED.” So what are you doing to help alleviate the detriments of stress in your life????

Migraine sufferers don’t get the understanding or sympathy they deserve. There are still lots of people who think that Migraines are just a really bad headache. They just don’t get that this isn’t something that you can pop an aspirin and push through, but that it can render you incapable of functioning in any normal capacity. Migraines are not just a headache, but a full blown neurological disease. A disease that may actually be among the oldest known to mankind.

Migraine symptoms were described in detail in Babylonian writings dating back to 3000 BC and Medical practices dating back to the Middle ages around 1100 A.D. consisted of Opium applied to the skull. Well, almost 1000 years later, opiods are still among the treatment options for Migraines. Examples such as Oxycontin, Demerol and Codeine flood the brain with the neurotransmitter dopamine and affect our pleasure centers of the brain, which is also why they are so addictive. Other meds such as the Triptans Imitrex, Maxalt and Zomig trick the brain into thinking it has more serotonin than it actually does. Sometimes anti-epileptic drugs are prescribed. These stimulate GABA. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain. Examples include Depakote, Topamax and Neurontin. If these don’t work, the Migraine sufferer may be put on Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Elavil, Cymbalta, Effexor, Wellbutrin, Amitriptyline or any one of the many antidepressants, because anti-depressants manipulate serotonin levels. And finally if none of those work, the doc may try Beta Blockers or Calcium Channel Blockers typically prescribed for cardio-vascular issues or perhaps when all else fails the muscle paralyzing wrinkle reducing wonder Botox. So, Now The BIG question. How does your doctor know which of ALL of these options is Best or what will be most effective with the least side effects for you!?…Do they!?…

There is no disputing that chronic Migraine is a debilitating condition. There is no question that sufferers deserve to have whatever options available to offer relief. What I find interesting in this WebMD article covering the approval of Botox for migraine headache treatment is they state over and over in this article that Migraines are a neurological disorder. How is a muscle paralyzing drug supposed to be a true solution for a neurological disorder?
While the chronic sufferer did respond to Botox by experiencing 8-9 less days of migraine symptoms over a six month period so did the placebo patients at 6-7 less days. These modest improvements will yield Allergan an estimated $1 billion in revenue. The procedure is done in efforts to dull the pain, not fix the problem. It needs to be repeated every 3 months and is not a permanent solution. Not only that, there is the potential for serious side effects by using Botox, including death as a result of paralysis to the muscles which help control breathing and swallowing.
The potential to experience 9 less days of debilitating pain over a six month period may be appealing to a chronic Migraine sufferer. Just know the risks and the facts associated with Botox. Is the potential payoff really worth the potential damage?
Why not consider Brain Based Therapy? The results could be every bit, if not considerably more successful, without the associated risks.

The United Kingdom was the first country to approve the use of Botox for Migraine treatment. That approval came just over a month after drug maker Allergan agreed to pay $600 million to settle a federal probe for illegally marketing Botox for the use of headaches. Huh!? Does that seem suspicious to anyone else?
That’s A LOT OF MONEY. So how is Allergan going to survive? Well, according to a William Blair & Co. analyst, the approval of Botox as a treatment for Migraines could be worth $1 billion to Allergan’s top line within five years.
What do you think, as a Migraine sufferer, is the reason for the fine and subsequent approval? Is it money driven or is Botox really a miracle solution for Chronic Migraneurs?

Is Botox a solution, a temporary fix or a masking of symptoms?
Federal Health officials approved the wrinkle smoothing injection Botox for Migraine headaches, giving drugmaker Allergan clearance to begin marketing its drug to patients with a serious history of the condition. But just what can potential users expect?
Doctors are directed to inject patients 31 times about the neck and head every 12 weeks. This is anticipated to DULL future headaches. The medication may not eliminate the occurrence of the headaches. However, it may decrease how debilitating the Migraine headaches can be.
It appears that for those in which the use of Botox is approved (15 or more headaches per month) a positive response would be a temporary dulling of the headache symptoms.
The potential to experience less intense pain by injecting Botox, no matter how insignificant it may be, could be appealing to a chronic Migraine sufferer. It is up to the sufferer to know the risks and the facts associated with using Botox for Migraines.
Is the potential payoff really worth the potential damage? Why not consider Brain Based Therapy which addresses core neurological dysfunction? The results could be every bit, if not considerably more successful, without the associated risks of Botox.

Botox is a diluted version of the botulinum toxin that is known for its ability to cause a type of food poisoning called botulism. The neurotoxin causes paralysis of muscles in the body and is currently being offered as a potential solution for chronic Migraine sufferers (15 or more per month). But as with any medication there are potential side effects that one must consider before using.
The most common side effects when Botox is administered for the treatment of Migraine headache are neck pain and HEADACHE. More importantly, there is potential risk of death due to difficulty breathing and swallowing because the muscles that you use to breathe and swallow can become weak after the injection.
Other side effects include anxiety, back pain, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, inability to focus the eyes, nausea, double or blurred vision, irregular heartbeat, loss of bladder control, paralysis, seizures, speech changes or problems and persistent muscle weakness.
The potential to experience a few less days of debilitating pain by injecting Botox may be appealing to a chronic Migraine sufferer. Just know the risks and the facts associated with Botox. Is the potential payoff really worth the potential damage? Why not consider Brain Based Therapy? The results could be every bit, if not considerably more successful, without the associated risks.
The amount of chronic pain is quite variable and can range from a nagging level of irritation to severe and disabling pain, although severe, disabling pain is quite rare. I enjoy working with people for early detection of DDD signs to prevent this chronic pain cycle from occurring. However, even if already in progress, the history is really quite favorable in managing the back pain, maintaining function and reducing recurrences with the right approach.

Proper health of a disc is dependent on normal spinal alignment, good posture and a healthy brain (specifically an area in the brain called the cerebellum). Chiropractic Care coupled with Spinal Decompression can keep the spine aligned and the discs hydrated to prevent and / or heal back aches due to disc disorders.

Some common symptoms of degenerative disc disease include:

1. Increased back pain with sitting, since in the seated position the lumbosacral discs are loaded three times more than standing.
2. Certain types of activity will usually worsen the low back pain, especially bending, lifting and twisting.
3. Walking, and even running, may actually feel better than prolonged sitting or standing.
4. Patients will generally feel better if they can change positions frequently.
5. Lying down is usually the best position since this relieves stress on the disc space.

If you know someone who works at a computer desk all day and is continually complaining of back pain, tell them they may be developing a degenerated disc. To avoid the negative effects of disc stress caused by sitting all day tell them they need to rehydrate their discs.

Proper hydration of a disc is dependent on normal spinal alignment, good posture and a healthy brain (specifically an area in the brain called the cerebellum). Chiropractic Care coupled with Spinal Decompression can keep the spine aligned and the discs hydrated to prevent and / or heal back aches due to disc disorders.

Nerves to the inter-vertebral disc space only penetrate into the very outer portion of the annulus fibrosus. Tears in the annulus sensitize these nerves which create significant acute pain. With continued degeneration, the nerves on the periphery of the disc will actually grow further into the disc space and become a chronic source of pain.

The inner disc material called the nucleus pulposus contains a great deal of inflammatory proteins. If this inner jelly like disc material leaks out to the outer annulus and touches the pain fibers there, it creates intense pain. If it progresses further and comes in contact with a spinal nerve root, it will inflame the nerve root and create pain down the leg (sciatica or radiculopathy). This is not a good place to be.

However, if you do find yourself suffering from sciatica there is hope. Chiropractic Care coupled with Spinal Decompression helps restore the disc integrity and removes the pressure on the sciatic nerve. That being said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Regular care to help maintain spinal alignment, good posture and proper disc hydration can prevent this painful experience altogether. We’ll see you on the adjusting table real soon!

There are four STAGES of Degenerative Disc Disease. The first involves a desiccation or dehydration of the disc which limits our normal range of motion and shows a loss of normal spinal curves and alignment. The second phase is indicated by a shrinking of the space at the posterior aspect of the disc, sometimes referred to as wedging. In the third phase we see a uniform loss of disc height and calcium build up. And in the final phase we have severe loss of disc space, calcium spurs present and shape changes to the vertebrae itself. Since the greatest joy for me is helping others, I love being able to prevent this cascade of degeneration in my patients.

I am sometimes asked, “but isn’t my disc degeneration just due to getting older?” To which I reply, “aren’t all of your discs the same age? Why is it only this one that is degenerating?” Think about it.

To prevent this debilitating cascade from occurring you need to keep your discs hydrated and aligned. Proper hydration of a disc is dependent on normal spinal alignment, good posture and a healthy brain (specifically an area in the brain called the cerebellum). A misaligned spine will cause degenerative disc disease.

Chiropractic Care coupled with Spinal Decompression can keep the spine aligned and the discs hydrated to prevent and / or heal back aches due to disc disorders.

A vast majority of lower back pain comes from the inter-vertebral disc. A vertebral disc is an interesting and unique structure made up of two very distinct components. A firm, tough outer layer of concentric sheets of collagen called the Annulus Fibrosis and a jelly like inner core containing a loose network of fibers suspended in a mucoprotein gel called the Nucleus Pulposis. Together these tissues act as ligaments that hold the vertebrae of the spine together, they serve as shock absorbers and are responsible for the mobility of the spine.

At birth, eighty percent of the disc is composed of water. In order for the disc to function properly, it must stay well hydrated. The nucleus pulposus is the major carrier of the body’s axial load and relies on its water-based contents to maintain strength and pliability. Much like the branch of a tree that becomes brittle as it dehydrates a disc will become susceptible to tears that lead to bulges, herniations (when the inner nucleus pulposis herniates out through the Annulus) and degeneration as it dehydrates. Disc bulges, herniations and degeneration cause Pain!

Osteoarthritis is often referred to as “wear and tear” arthritis that is associated with aging. Degenerative Disc Disease, or DDD’s changes are similar to those found in osteoarthritis but occur as a result of trauma and spinal misalignment or poor posture. Indications of DDD are 1) loss of function, i.e. a decrease in normal range of motion and 2) loss of normal structure that can be seen on x-ray such as loss of disc height or spur formation. The danger with x-ray analysis alone is that a 30% biochemical and histological change will occur before DDD can be seen on an x-ray. That simply means that there will be a 30% loss of the cartilage within the disc before it is viewable on an x-ray. Range of
Motion is a better way to detect early onset of DDD and can be measured in my office using computerized dual inclinometry. Measurements are compared to the normals established in the A.M.A.’s guides to the evaluation of permanent impairment. Chiropractic Care coupled with Spinal Decompression is a great way to restore normal range of motion and prevent future spinal degeneration.

CNN.com reports that Botox, the neuro-toxic drug that was originally approved for the treatment of strabismus (crossed eyes) and blepharospasm (eyelid spasms), but gained infamy for its ability to remove frown lines between the brow is now being thrown in the mix with the other 100+ treatments for Migraines.

I need to make some things very clear for those that believe that this may be their saving grace.

First, the drug didn’t work for people that experience Migraines less than 14 days a month.

Second, it is NOT effective for other forms of headache.

Third, the results of the studies, upon which the approval was made, show very modest improvements. Over the six month period, chronic Migraine sufferers (15 per month or more) experienced an average of 8-9 fewer headache days as compared to placebo that experienced 6-7 fewer headache days.

Fourth, the most common side effects were neck pain and HEADACHE! 1% of patients had worsened Migraine symptoms and a small percentage of people dropped out of the study due to adverse reactions.

Fifth, the procedure needs to be repeated every 3 months. It is not a cure, but an intervention with modest results.

Finally, it is possible that the toxin can spread beyond where it is injected causing life threatening symptoms such as difficulty swallowing and breathing.

The potential to experience 9 less days of debilitating pain over a six month period may be appealing to a chronic Migraine sufferer. Just know the risks and the facts associated with Botox. Is the potential payoff really worth the potential damage?

Why not consider an alternative such as Brain Based Therapy? The results could be every bit, if not considerably more successful, without the associated risks.

To learn more about Brain Based Therapy and Migraine headaches, sign up for the Special Report I offer on the Migraine section of my website. You can also watch the introduction to BBT video and read the “What is BBT?” section on the website at www.decaturchiro.com .
